If you’ve never encountered a 𝐒𝐚𝐧𝐤𝐞𝐲 𝐃𝐢𝐚𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐦, you’re missing out on a remarkably effective visualization tool.
Clear visualization is essential for making informed decisions. One of the most effective tools for this purpose is the Sankey Diagram.
🔍 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐚 𝐒𝐚𝐧𝐤𝐞𝐲 𝐃𝐢𝐚𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐦? A Sankey diagram is a type of flow diagram where the width of the arrows is proportional to the flow quantity. This makes it an excellent tool for visualizing processes, resource allocations, and energy transfers. Commonly used in fields like engineering, environmental science, and logistics, Sankey diagrams illustrate the efficiency of systems and help identify major contributors and bottlenecks.
📊 𝐒𝐚𝐧𝐤𝐞𝐲 𝐃𝐢𝐚𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐦𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐅𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞: Traditionally used in technical fields, Sankey diagrams are also incredibly valuable in finance. They provide a clear, visual representation of financial flows, making complex data more accessible and easier to interpret. To illustrate its potential, I applied a Sankey diagram to Amdocs’ Q2/24 Statement of Income.
💡 𝐏𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐔𝐬𝐞 𝐂𝐚𝐬𝐞𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐅𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞: 𝐈𝐧𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬: Present the full P&L in one comprehensive visual, highlighting the flow from revenue through to net income. 𝐂𝐚𝐬𝐡 𝐅𝐥𝐨𝐰: Clearly see how funds are distributed across various categories, aiding precise budgeting and financial planning. 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐜𝐞 𝐀𝐥𝐥𝐨𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧/𝐁𝐮𝐝𝐠𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠: Visualize how resources are distributed across various departments or projects, enabling more effective management and optimization.
Effective data visualization is essential for insightful financial storytelling. A Sankey Diagram provides a clear picture of financial flows, enhancing our understanding and enabling us to communicate insights more clearly. This clarity supports strategic decisions on investments, cost-cutting, and resource optimization. 📊💼
