🚫 What AI CANNOT replace in Finance Departments (Hint: Our human powers 💪)

In the age of AI, there are still some key skills that make us humans irreplaceable. As a Finance business partner and FP&A lead, I've found that AI tools are great for productivity and automating tasks, but there are some things that only we can do:

🤝 𝐅𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐁𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩 – Our customers and stakeholders might use the dashboards and tools that provide useful data. AI can also help them with nice analysis and charts. But we offer nuanced human judgment, holistic views, the ability to convince and give strategic guidance while AI lacks context and flexibility.

📊 𝐁𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐲𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐬𝐤𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐬 – AI may give insights, but our deep understanding uncovers the full story and guides strategic decisions.

💕 𝐄𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐲 While an outsider might think we are cold-hearted who are only dealing with numbers, we know that in order for us to do our job well, we must exercise empathy. We oversee a cross-organization cost structuring. We set strategic goals for business leaders, to name a few. These projects require the appropriate empathy, especially if they involve outcomes that affects people’s jobs or compensation.

👥 𝐂𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 - effective financial leadership requires collaboration with business leaders, HR, Operations, Accounting, etc. So far, I don't see how these synergies can be replaced with AI (Finance bots chatting with other bots? Maybe someday 😛)

📖 𝐒𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲𝐭𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 - The ability to clearly communicate across departments is imperative. You need to feel the audience and adjust your message accordingly.

🤔 𝐂𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 –At this point most of the AI tools I use feel “half cooked”. Results are sometimes wrong or misleading. It is crucial to question any output given by AI.

💪 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩 𝐬𝐤𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐬 – We influence, guide teams though complex financial landscapes, educate new talents, problem solve, navigate and manage the the financial outcomes of different scenarios.
